Students

Discover greater opportunities and exposure with a rural placement.

Working rurally means your exposure and experience in your chosen field can be very broad, as services are limited, and local health professionals need to be versatile and multi-skilled. Studying and working remotely gives you the opportunity to experience learning opportunities you wouldn't get in a metropolitan area. Students are embedded in the community, providing deep insights into the industries, lifestyles, and cultures of the rural and remote contexts. Providing rich opportunities to better understand public health and the well-being of the communities in which you live, work, and serve. Students are provided opportunities to volunteer, network, and have fun.

Who can do a placement with us?

At the JCU Central Queensland Centre for Rural and Remote Health in Emerald, we take Allied Health, Nursing, Medical, and Dentistry students from all universities in Australia. Our goal is to provide students with a professional, meaningful, and enriching rural placement experience. We achieve this by focusing on supporting students whilst they do traditional placements in the public and private sectors, but also offer placements in our own ' Service Leaning" clinics which are organised and run by our Allied health staff within various community organisations. By fostering relationships with local clinicians, service providers, and community stakeholders we aim to improve health outcomes for the region whilst giving students an experience they will never forget.

Where do students stay whilst on placement?

We have multiple residences in Emerald that have been set up for students to give them a home-away-from-home experience during their rural placement. The houses are well equipped for student living, with lockable rooms, Wi-Fi, and social spaces that allow for social connection with other students from other disciplines. Best of all, accommodation is fully subsidised by CQCRRH to all Commonwealth-supported place (CSP) students studying a relevant health profession.
